New York Fashion Week and Diana Ross in Concert

What a fabulous trip to New York for fashion week and Diana Ross!  Pics and post on my new home:

Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

[tweetmeme source=”socialitedreams” only_single=false]

I am NOT a morning person by any stretch of the imagination.  Brain feels fried and groggy, body has aches like a 90 year old who did stunt devil’s work for decades, face looks like it’s been hit with a mallet….yeah I know, drop dead sexy visual, right?   So what’s a girl to do who has a job that starts before noon?

MUSIC!  Music is my saving grace, able to alter any mood with its melodious harmonies and crooning voices.  The invention of the iPod is probably the greatest one in recent history (besides the internet of course, couldn’t talk to you peeps without that, right?) and allows thousands of songs to be conveniently available at the spin of a tiny dial.

My question for you is:  What are three songs that instantly perk you up, get you on your way, and turn AAAAHHHH GRRRR into MMMM.   Let’s hear it!

I’ll start.  My 3 instant mood perk me up songs are:

1. PYT – Michael Jackson = I love this song so much I’m having it as a part of my license plate…what? I AM a P(retty) Y(oung) T(hang) so it fits!

2. Blame it on the Boogie – Jackson 5 = this song just gets me going! it’s so upbeat and I love the end.  Video is cute too, just all around fun.

3. 5 Star Chick – Yo Gotti, Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj = Had to get my bit of ghetto driving music in here 😀

Well those are mine!  What are your 3 get up and get em songs?

And that’s MISS ROSS to You

*edit: We have a new home!

What comes to mind when I think of the amazing Diana Ross is Icon, Diva, sassy, beautiful, and the embodiment of the word GLAMOROUS.

This magnanimous woman has had a career that spans 5 decades and includes musical success, both with The Supremes and as a solo artist, along with a movie career that gave her memorable roles and an Oscar nomination.  I’ve always thought of her first when Motown and glamor come to mind, but it wasn’t until my boo Michael Jackson died (they’d been such close friends and I felt that I wanted to know more about her) that I actually started researching into her career and life, thus leading me to read her biography: Diana Ross by J. Randy Taraborrelli When I say Miss Ross has LIVED, that’d be an understatement!  I HIGHLY recommend the book, it showcases her drive and hunger for success, gives a poignant look into the woman.

Why am I even mentioning any of this?  BECAUSE I’M FREAKING EXCITED, that’s why! 😛  Guess who’s going to see the diva in action?  The superstar will be on her “More Today Than Yesterday: The Greatest Hits Tour” performing in select cities and I am so thrilled to be going to check her out on September 14th in New York.

Now the hunt is on for a totally fun, glamorous, chic outfit that will be worthy of even being in the same ZIP CODE as Miss Ross.  And let’s not forget the MAKEUP that will have to be on point 😀  I need your help, what are some of your favorite online shops (or Chicago boutiques for any fellow Chicagoans)  for sparkly glam apparel?  Give me some ideas!  *Smooches*

The Princess and the Frog

*edit: We have a new home!

I went to see the Princess and the Frog with my best friend and must say that I was very pleased!  The drawing and imagery was BEAUTIFUL, just gorgeous.  There’s a light path part of the movie that is just so well done, the lightening bug parade so to speak.  Just beautiful.

Storyline wise, I liked the hard working Tiana and her bubbly loud mouth blonde best friend, Charlotte.  Tiana is working hard, with no time for anything else at all, in order to buy a building to build a restaurant.  Throughout the story, she needs to learn that she should enjoy life a bit more too.  Prince Naveen has arrived, but he needs to learn some responsibility and acts like a typical rich frat boy stereotype.  He’s gorgeous, but his arrogant selfish ways weren’t too cute!  He has to go on a character building journey as well.

I liked the songs, but none stood out that made me sing out of the theater like “A Whole New World”, “Part of Your World” or “Hakuna Matata”.  The jazzy upbeat tunes are pleasing to the ear definitely, but as for iconic?  Not thinking so, but I’ll hear them again before I judge too greatly.  The sidekicks/secondary characters are also fun.  I HATED the lightening bug in the previews and stuff, but during the movie he was one of my favorites and a great ally.  The gator was also fun and just wanted to be accepted, lovely character.  The bad guys were quite scary, I mean whoa.  The shadow demons were quite terrifying, especially in the end.  if i were a young child i’d be having some nightmares, honestly!

Overall I give it an A-  I’ll add it to my collection as a favorite, wish that it had a stand out song to it though (or like Aladdin, Little Mermaid, and Lion King: MOST of the songs are stand out songs in those movies, lol)

Welcome to the Disney Princess’ Clique, Tiana.  You’ll fit in fine!  Beautiful, strong, good character, definite role model 🙂

Princess Tiana

Never Can Say Goodbye

Yesterday we lost a musical ICON/LEGEND/MEGASTAR when we lost Michael Jackson.  I was shocked into a stupor and into denial, as were many people, because honestly he seemed incapable of death, if that makes any sense.  I just never even thought about him dying.  How do you say goodbye to someone who has decades of music that was the soundtrack to your life, your first crush, an amazing career like that?  How do you say goodbye to an icon?  From the days of being a cutie pie in the Jackson 5 to being  a revolutionary solo artist, Michael Jackson forever changed music and videos.

Crying as I watched the tribute shows and videos, it really hit me as to how many of this man’s songs were ingrained in me.  It’d be nearly impossible to pick a favorite, as they were so diverse and spaced out.  I’d have to go by age/era.   This is  a tribute to my LOVE and admiration for the guy who made music worth listening to for decades.  Not to mention, have you seen that smile? He deserves accolades just for that beautiful smile.

young Michael/Jackson Five era

When Ben came on the radio today as I was driving, I seriously almost had an accident since I was crying so much.  This beautiful song already was a tear-jerker to the inner sap in me, and then with the circumstances?  I was practically inconsolable.  This, with Who’s Loving You; Music and Me; and I’ll Be There, I Want You Back have always been my favorites from a young Michael.  They are songs that I can hear 1000000000 times and still perk up in excitement and cherish.  I still can’t believe that he’s gone…that angelic voice of his youth is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Teen Michael/The Jacksons

I absolutely LOOOOOVE “All I Do is Think of You” and could seriously listen to that song on repeat for the rest of my life and be fine with it.  So underrated, just makes me want to be all “squeeeee” and in love, lol.   That along with “Blame it on the Boogie“, “Find Me a Girl”  and “Dance Machine” are highlights of those years for me.  Great music and he was beyond adorable at the time.  Bouncy fluffy fro and big smile, I would have MELTED as a teenager in the 70s.

Off the Wall

Rock with you, that’s all I have to say about that.  What perfection that song is, he just sounds heavenly.  Oh yes, I’d love for that to be singing me to sleep, rock the night away indeed!

Thriller Era Michael

Human Nature is a BEAUTIFUL song on that Cd.  Honestly, I thought it was from one of his later cds, it sounds so mature and wonderful.  Thriller is fun, Beat It is hot,PYT is my FAVORITE and will be jamming at my wedding, and Billie Jean….iconic!  And with 109  million copies sold to date, obviously I’m not the only one who loved that cd.  And the way that the media is now, I know that no one will ever top his record.  Job well done, Michael 😉

BAD era (my favorite era…oh the things i’d do to HIM)

My very first foray into Michael Jackson Mania was with my cousin who was in her late teens/early 20s around the time of the BAD and then DANGEROUS cds.  When I say that she was obsessed, it’s an understatement.  It was so bad that as a child (around 2-4), I actually thought that she was dating him because his was the only male name that I heard from her, she had his face plastered all over her walls and dressers, his music was the only thing that she listened to and she called him her boyfriend.  So of course young me really thought he was and I was so happy for her.  BAD still remains my favorite cd of his, from the simple fact of it was the soundtrack of my young years and I saw the videos on total repeat (you know she had every video and his little movies like Moonwalker and Captain Eo on vhs).  BAD along with him in SPEED DEMON (I can only describe him as beautiful in that video.  His smile was on a whole different level, and this was where the surgery was perfect and where he should have stopped.  Face still moved naturally, everything was gorgeous) set me on my path to being infatuated with light skinned/long haired men all through my teen days years later.  I hadn’t even made the connection until I thought about how many of my exes looked similar to that style.  God, I still want to lick the screen whenever BAD comes on; the clothes, the confidence/swagger, the dances….mmm, he could have SO got it back then.    My other  favorite song from that CD would have to be THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL.  I always get a smile when it comes on.  DIRTY DIANA and ANOTHER PART OF ME are also great hits from that cd.  And we can’t forget Smooth Criminal and Man in the Mirror.  Pretty much the whole frigging cd, really!  I like the BAD cd even better than the record breaking THRILLER. And video wise, there is NOTHING like the sexiness of Come Together:

On the Dangerous CD, I love “Give in to Me”  and, “In the Closet” (can we talk about him and naomi in this video?  GOTDAMN, THAT IS HOT) and  “Who is it”  Good CD, but not my favorite like lots of fans.  Thriller and Bad top it for me!  I like other songs here and there on the later cds, but these outlined here are my clear favorites.

If nothing else, Michael Jackson was distinctive and will never be duplicated (as hard as most try…I’m looking at you, Chris Brown, Usher, and Ne-yo, among others).  His reputation may have been tarnished in the last 15 years, but his music and cultural impact speaks for itself.  He was the first black artist “allowed” on MTV, revolutionized the way music videos were done, spawned fashion trends that defined a decade, was a pure humanitarian, and set many a heart afire.  I wish that his personal life could have been as rewarding as the professional life, but with a rough childhood and what seems to have been body dysmorphic disorder, that goal of peace in life was sadly never to be reached and it saddens me that he was never truly happy even though he made so many happy.

What really saddens me and makes me want to hug him is how misunderstood I feel that he was.  Everything personal conspired against the poor man.  First his dad was an abusive psycho jerk and he was deprived a childhood which made him fascinated with being a kid later in life.  Then came the issues that made him so unhappy with his physical.  Being called “big nose” by his dad, a broken nose and botched surgery to fix it, hair catching on fire  and needing reconstructive surgery, vitiligo….how much can one person take?    So no wonder he liked being around kids, as they were probably the only ones who didn’t judge him or expect something in return for friendship.  Interesting how molestation charges only came up once the kid’s dad and Michael fell out and the dad said “I will ruin his life, it will be a win win for me” meaning he’d get money and destroy Michael’s life. Because as we all saw, even if falsly accused of something like that, you never bounce back.  Then that opened the door for other leeches to come forward with the same type of bs.  For a man who is in the guiness book of world records for charitable work, a known patron for children, and a shy sweetheart, I just don’t  see him having touched those kids inappropriately.  I hate that it ruined his life and wish that so many things could have been different.  Such talent and such musical genius and all some can talk about is the weirdness that happened later.  No wonder he felt so alone.

I somehow never thought that this day would come, but goodbye to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.  You were one-in-a-million and I know that I’m not alone in saying that you will be missed.  We may have never understood you and it didn’t seem like you understood yourself, but the passion and dedication you put into your craft was undeniable and inspiring to all.  You “thrilled” us and indeed, are “gone too soon”.  RIP to the gloved one.

I’d Have Kissed Her

I’ve been rocking out to the album “One of the Boys” by the coyishly cool Katy Perry.

I’m really feeling her fun style, and find myself in songs like “If You Can Afford Me”, which boasts such lyrics as:

If you want me, it takes more than a wink,
And more than a drink and more than you think.
If you want me you’re gonna have to break the bank, tonight.
Cuz some don’t have the patience, some call me high-maintenance
But you pay the bill, cuz, that’s the deal.

If you want me, then stop begging I don’t put out for charity
If you want me there’s no discount price tonight

Come on, those lyrics are AWESOME, and would have been my theme song in South Beach Miami if she’d come out 4 years ago. Then there are the more love songs of “Mannequin” where she wants the guy to feel how she feels and stop being so uptight and cold to her, and the great song “I Think I’m Ready” where she feels the need to grow up and get out of “friend” territory with the bad boys and into being appreciated and loved by a good man. I really really like that song.

I’m used to opening my own doors and splitting the checks
He introduced me, was always just a friend
I bought a new dress, he never noticed
Always falling for these bad boys, such a challenge

You were such a surprise
An unexpected gift
Told myself I don’t deserve you
And this is just a phase
Could I get used to being loved the right way?
I wanna argue, but there is nothing to say

Okay, I can’t write a post about Katy Perry and not mention everyone’s favorite song, “I Kissed a Girl”. That song is pretty badass, I like the beat and sound so much. May even get ring tone status 😉 And look at her, if i were in an experimental phase, I’d kiss her too!

also, the song “Thinking of You”  has been on repeat and a ringtone for me.  The video is truly spectacular and underrated in my opinion.  The clothing, the men, the sad storyline, the acting….lord, it’s a breathtaking video that even makes me cry.  A 2 hr romantic drama tragedy condensed into 4 minutes…LOVE IT
